Pumpkins, buttercups and acorns (Winter squash – Cucurbita pepo)
These are easy to grow and lots of fun to see which squash you want to use for Halloween. Direct sow 3 seeds 1 inch (2 cm) deep or begin indoors and transplant after last frost and thin to the strongest plant. Space seedling mounds well apart (i.e. 2-5 feet or 0.6-1.2 m) or in an area where the vines have space to grow and trail – larger pumpkins need larger spaces. Flowers may be male or female (have a round bulb) – each plant will produce both types at the same time at some point during season. Harvest before frost or cover and remove from garden prior to freezing temperatures.
Molted gigantic (10-12 Seeds )
These have a thin pale orange with yellow spots outside and dark orange flesh. Although most of the pumpkins are of a medium size, the plant is humongous and has the potential to grow very large pumpkins if care was taken to grow only one per vine. Have nice seeds for eating.
