Beans (Phaseolus vulgaris)
Although these may be direct sown after last frost when the ground is workable about 1 1/2 inches (3 cm) deep and apart, they may also be ‘pre-started’ by soaking between wet paper towels for a few days and then transplanted root side down.
Green pods with meaty kidneys – okay as ‘green beans’ when very small, otherwise used chopped due to string of pod to give a meaty bean in soups and stews or save for dried beans to use in chili’s, soups and to refry. The bushy plants need space to grow so thin to 6 inches (15 cm) in rows 1 .-2 feet (45 – 60 cm) apart. Often get one set of ‘green beans’ and one set of drying beans.
